Event Description

Join us for an evening exploring 6 different grape varieties from Hondarrabi Zuri to Primitivo, with some rather more well-known varieties in between.

The most well-known grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominate the shelves of wine retailers and restaurant wine lists, but there are literally hundreds of other grape varieties including some real hidden gems that you may not be so familiar with.

During this evening, we explore the Alphabet of Grapes from H to P, sampling 6 different wines, 3 white and 3 red from 4 different countries.

H is for Hondarrabi Zuri, a white grape variety few people have heard of.  Its a lovely refreshing white from the basque country of Northern Spain.

J is for Jacqueres, another white grape variety that many haven't heard of, but if you've been skiing in the French Alpine region of Savoie, chances are you've had wines made from this variety.

L is for Lambrusco, a red variety that is associated with some unremarkable supermarker wines, but the eponymous sparkling red wine of Italy from this grape can surprise and delight you if you know where to look.

M is for Marsanne, a white variety associated with the Rhône Valley, it is also widely planted in Victoria, Australia where it makes aromatic, full-bodied wines that are nothing like mass-produced branded supermarket wine.

N is for Nebbiolo, Italy's finest red variety from Piedmont.  This is a genuine superstar amongst grape varieties associated with the famous villages of Barolo and Barbaresco.  We will sample one of these wonderful wines tonight.

P is for Primitivo, the variety that the Americans call Zinfandel makes some fruity and full-bodied wines from Puglia in Southern Italy. Great value for money too.

Have fun, expand your wine knowledge and sample some lovely wines.

This is the second part of a 3-part A-Z exploration of grape varieties, why not book onto all three here?

As usual, ISO tasting glasses are provided along with tasting notes. Some suitable light snacks will help the wine down.
