Event Description
Sparkling wine has become almost an “everyday wine” in recent years, not least due to the amazing success of Prosecco.
At the other end of the scale, Champagne sales have struggled slightly in recent years, but they still ship over 300m bottles per year, very much at the top end of the market.
However, if like most wine drinkers you want to discover quality wines at great value prices, the interesting part is what can you buy that is nearly as good as Champagne but at prices close to Prosecco?
There are several wines that potentially meet this description. For example, Cava from Spain, or one of the many Cremant sparkling wines from France. English sparkling wine is considered a worthy rival to Champagne in terms of quality; the trick is finding one that isn’t priced like Champagne. Alongside Prosecco, Italy also produces Franciacorta, which is nothing like Prosecco and a lot more like Champagne.
Sometimes overlooked with the rise of Prosecco, there are some great sparkling wines from places like South Africa and for something really left field, alongside some truly unremarkable basic Sekt, Germany does produce fantastic Deutscher Sekt.
There are also some red sparkling wines from places like Australia…
So, join us as taste our way through some of these wines. We will start with a Prosecco Superiore, and we will end with a Champagne. The four sparkling wines in between will include a Cava and a Cremant and a couple of surprises.
A great way to spend a Friday evening in August.
