Course Description
With the most land under vine in the world, Spain produces some of the most exciting wines in the world. From the famous Rioja to up and coming Bierzo, there is something to suit every palate. Over 3 weeks we will take a deep dive into one of the world's most exciting winemaking countries.
Week 1: Rioja Masterclass.
Rioja has a long history of winemaking and is often the 1st region people name when they think of Spanish wine. On this masterclass we will discover that there is more to Rioja than the Tempranillo dominated wines aged for a long time in oak.We'll introduce you to the whites and rosés of the region. We'll also explore some of the undiscovered grapes of the region such as Maturana Tinta, Tempranillo Blano and Monastel. Alongside a look at modern Rioja winemaking tecniques.Last, but not least, we will taste through a Crianza, Reserva & Gran Reserva, to once and for all taste the difference oak and bottle ageing makes in this region.
Week 2: White Wines of Spain.
As the popularity of Spanish wine continues to grow, we thought it was high time we shone a light on the white wines of the Spain. This is one not to miss with a thorough exploration from fresh, zesty whites to aged, underappreciated wines.
On this tasting we will explore the white wines of Spain, including, but not limited to:
- Verdejo from Rueda
- Godello from Galicia
- Rare whites of Priorat
- Cava - or is it?
- Txakoli
- Garnacha Blanca from Terra Alta
- Modern White Rioja
- Palomino - it's not all about Sherry!
Week 3: Red Wines of Spain.
Torn about Toro? Rumbling about Ribera? Pondering Priorat? This tasting is for you. We will uncover the reds of Spain, and take a path less well trodden with grapes you may never have tasted before. The tasting will include a selection of the following:
- Garnacha
- Priorat Red
- Toro
- Aged Ribera del Duero
- Bobal from Valencia
- Juicy Monastrell
- Light and fresh Mencia
- Tempranillo blend from Castilla y Leon
