Not that Merlot lovers need a reason to open a bottle, but as it is International Merlot Day on November 7th, it is time to celebrate and take a look at this popular grape.

When asked for the most widely planted grape in Bordeaux, many wine lovers would say Cabernet Sauvignon. However, there are more hectares devoted to Merlot than any other grape in Bordeaux. Merlot makes up 62% of all plantings in Bordeaux compared to Cabernet Sauvignon’s 25% of the regions plantings.

Sales of Merlot took a dive after the film Sideways after the protagonist proclaims his dislike for Merlot and his love for Pinot Noir, but now Merlot outsells Pinot Noir by more than two to one.

Buy why is it so popular? It is known for its soft, smooth texture and approachable style.

It can adapt to a variety of climates to produce food-friendly wine at a variety of price points. It can be simple and reasonably priced (but still very drinkable) or it can be concentrated with intense aromas such as a Petrus which has been 100% Merlot each vintage since 2010.

One of our favourites is; Villa Maria Private Bin Merlot, Waitrose, £12.99. which has the typical Merlot plummy and dark cherry notes with subtle notes of vanilla and cedar from the oak maturation.

The grapes come from the amazing vineyards at Gimblett Gravels on North Island, New Zealand.  Although only a very small area, this district with its high sunshine hours and low rainfall has made a significant impact on the New Zealand wine market in a very short space of time.

This wine will be making an appearance at our Wines for Christmas event being held at the Chelmsford Club on 5th December.
