Event Description
We are excited to be joined by winemakers of the Grandes Pagos de España to bring you this innovative terroir-driven workshop, focusing on the exceptional ‘grand crus’ of Spain. Both wine school founder, Jimmy Smith, and school Spanish wine expert, Fran Moynihan, have recently returned from an action-packed immersive visit across the GPE and are thrilled to be delivering this exciting, different and unique course at WLWS. This is an exclusive course, the first of its kind to be delivered in the UK and a wine will be represented from each estate meaning that you will taste around 34 outstanding wines on the course.
Founded in 2000, Grandes Pagos de España is an association of 34 prestigious wineries from across Spain, dedicated to single-estate production. This comprehensive two-day course (running over consecutive Sundays: 12th and 19th January 2025) will take you on a journey to each of the 34 pagos to understand how their history, culture, climate, geography and people influence terroir.
We will be joined for each course by at least one of their winemakers, who will be there to share with you first-hand the mission of the Grandes Pagos de España, the challenges they face and the stories of their wines. Students attending our first course will benefit from a special introductory price of £195. All the wines which will be tasted have been hand-picked by Jimmy and Fran, together with the Grandes Pagos de España, to demonstrate what makes the terroir of each estate and personality of their wines so distinct.
You will receive a superb digital study guide before the beginning of the course covering the regions of Spain which will be explored: Green Spain, Meseta North, Ebro River Valley, Catalonia, Mediterranean, Meseta Central, South and the Islands. The second day will conclude with a short multiple choice and tasting exam.
There are no pre-requisites for this workshop and anyone is welcome to join us to experience the exceptional wines of the GPE. However, a good understanding of viticulture and winemaking (eg WSET Level 3 or equivalent) is recommended in order to get the most out of the material.
