Event Description
Legend has it that the Albariño grape first arrived in Galicia with Cluny monks in the 12th century—but modern science suggests this beloved variety has far deeper roots. In fact, Albariño was likely thriving in the region long before the monks, with evidence pointing all the way back to Celtic times.
This evening, we're thrilled to welcome the brilliant team from Altos de Torona as we take a deep dive into the world of Albariño and its fascinating friends. We’ll explore wines from across the Rías Baixas DO, while also discovering lesser-known, indigenous grapes that are every bit as exciting.
Our journey begins with the Gómez family, whose love for their land and vines led them to establish a winemaking legacy in 1954. In the heart of O Salnés, they produce the award-winning Pazo de Villarei Albariño—a beautifully expressive wine that we’ll have the pleasure of tasting tonight.
The Gómez family also owns Altos de Torona, the largest single vineyard in Galicia. Spanning 94 hectares on a stunning hillside in O Rosal, the vineyard overlooks the River Miño, with the Atlantic Ocean nearby and northern Portugal just across the border. This unique setting creates a special microclimate that brings freshness, elegance and a true Atlantic character to their wines.
Altos de Torona champions not just Albariño, but a host of native Galician grapes—including Caíño Blanco, Godello and Loureira—offering an exciting glimpse into the diversity of the region. These artisanal wines reflect the soul of Galicia: vibrant, fresh, and full of personality.
To begin the evening, we’ll enjoy a real rarity—the only sparkling wine produced in the O Rosal sub-zone: the Altos de Torona Brut 2021. Then, we’ll continue with a guided tasting of the fantastic wines below
