Event Description
Celebrate World Albariño Day at Thames Valley Wine School. Albariño Day originated from a friendly wine competition in Cambados, the ‘capital’ of Rías Baixas in 1953 to find the best Albariño. This soon led to a larger festival, the Fiesta del Albariño, which is now celebrated annually around August 1st. There are so many nowadays dreamt up by marketeers but this one really does have an authentic backstory.
Albariño is one of the white grapes of the moment - taking over from Picpoul and Sauvignon Blanc as a good choice for a refreshing aperitif.
Albariño is the key grape in the Rias Baixas DO in Galicia in north west Spain and it pairs perfectly with the shellfish and fish from the Atlantic ocean as well as grilled vegetable dishes and salads.
In the UK we can now buy wines from over 30 wine producers from Rias Baixas and the number is growing each year. Styles range from fresh and fruity to lees aged and more complex.
This tasting will introduce you to six well chosen Albariño wines from different producers covering the key styles and will bring the region to life for you.
This evening is suitable for all levels of wine knowledge!
This event will include tasting samples of six carefully selected wines, wine notes & handouts, and a 2-hour interactive presentation, with Q&A, led by our wine tutor.
