Event Description
I've been following the rise of Bacchus over many years and decided Norwich Wine Week was the perfect time to dedicate a tasting to the grape variety that has quietly broken through to become a beacon of Britain's winemaking success.
Join us for an engaging tasting that traces the rise of Bacchus from obscure German variety to award-winning English favourite. You’ll discover how this grape thrives in our cool climate, and why it’s often described as “England’s answer to Sauvignon Blanc.”
However this catchy slogan only tells part of the Bacchus story. While the classic English style remains punchy & aromatic there are leaner, more nettley styles emerging while other winemakers are choosing to use winemaking techniques such as skin contact and barrel ageing to add texture and complexity and tease out a different expression of Bacchus.
I will present my selection of six standout Bacchus wines from across the country, showcasing the grape’s versatility, regional expressions and distinctive styles. The tasting will feature locally sourced wines reflecting the region's leading role in pioneering wines made with Bacchus.
Along the way, we’ll explore its history, winemaking potential, and the role it’s playing in shaping the identity of English still wine. You'll also enjoy some nibbles selected to pair with a couple of the wines.
Whether you’re interested English wine or simply Bacchus-curious, this is your chance to explore Britain’s breakout grape in all its glory.
