Event Description
It’s slightly short notice, but we’ve been given the opportunity to host our first-ever tasting focussing on the wines of Hungary. It’s a country with a wine history dating back at least to Roman times, and which, certainly in wine terms, has emerged from the Communist era as successfully as anywhere.
We’re very pleased to be joined for this by András Horkay, who’s been promoting Hungarian wines and wine regions both at home and abroad since 2010. He’s the founder and director of the Central European Wine Institute (CEWI) – think of it as the Budapest equivalent of Manchester Wine School - and also lectures in the field of tourism and hospitality.
András will guide us through a selection of wines from what arguably are Hungary’s two best known regions. There’ll be some wines from the prestigious Tokaj region in the north-east, the oldest classified wine region in the world. Here, the Furmint grape (often aided by a couple of other varieties) is used to produce not only some of the world’s finest sweet wines but also increasingly impressive dry whites.
And heading south-west to the opposite end of the country, there’ll be a selection from the Villány region close to the Croatian border, where a combination of local grapes such as Portugesier and Kékfrankos rub shoulder with the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot top produce delicious red wines.
With at least eight wines to try and an expert to guide you through them, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Thanks to the generosity of “Best of Hungary” in assistance with this event, we’re able to offer this tasting for just £40 a head.
