Come and taste the wines of Georgia

“It is a country favored in climate, very rich in soil, and it has its own little ocean.”

So said John Steinbeck of Georgia, the country where Europe meets Asia, and a place that deserves to be on everyone’s wine radar. It is believed that vitis vinifera, the species that includes all but a few of the grapes currently used to make wine, originated here. And in an era when many producers around the world are beginning to experiment with producing wine in clay vessels, the Georgians can proudly say that they’ve been doing that for over 8,000 years!

It’s five years since we last did a tasting of Georgian wines, so we thought it was time to rectify that. We’ll be sampling sparkling wine, rosé wine, white wine, amber/orange wine, red wine and possibly some sweet wine, with the majority of them made from indigenous grapes – of which Georgia claims to have well over 500. And yes, there’ll be some aged in clay vessels – here known as qvevris
