Event Description

Those over a certain age will remember when Bulgarian wine was a major feature on UK shop shelves. Cut to today, and the wines are harder to find, which us a shame, as the quality and diversity is better than ever. And where once the wineries would look to the classic grapes for France for inspiration, today’s there’s a new respect for the local grapes, which can be very good indeed.

Now’s your chance to find that out for yourself, with our tasting the wines of the Thracian Lowlands PGI. The Thracians were an ethno-cultural community who settled on the Balkan Peninsula 6,000 years ago. They worshiped Dionysus, the god of grapes and wine, so wine became symbolic of the rebirth and immortality of the human soul.

We’re not going to promise immortality for those coming along to the tasting, but we can promise an evening of interesting and unusual wines, with those indigenous grapes such as Mavrud, Rubin, & Pamid starring alongside more familiar varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

This tasting has been organised in collaboration with Westbury Communications Ltd, assisting the Bulgarian Wine Export Association led by the Baltic Gastronomy Leaders. Thanks to their generosity, we are able to offer this tasting of eight wines for just £35.
