Meet the winemaker online: Franz Haas from Alto Adige (for TWO or more)

There are no upcoming dates for this event. Please view all events.

Duration
1.5 hours

Event Description

We are meeting Franz Haas Junior, whose father Franz Senior sadly recently passed away leaving a powerful legacy behind him.

Franz Senior was the 7th generation of winemakers in his family. A radical visionary, he helped to raise the quality of wine made in his region and was dubbed 'the Italian King of Pinot Nero ' by Italian newspapers.

Alto Adige is an area of marked alpine influence that makes fresh and intensely fruity styles of wine. Vineyards are often planted at very high altitudes, not to escape the heat so much as to catch the maximum sun.

We'll taste a beautiful part barrel-fermented Pinot Bianco, an intense and aromatic dry Gewurztraminer and finish with a Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir), the grape that Franz Senior adopted as a passion project during his lifetime.

This ticket is for two or more. Click here if you want to book for ONE (£16).

Franz fought to make changes he felt necessary even if it brought him into conflict with the authorities. He planted vineyards at a higher altitude to get more sunlight because he pointed out the sun sets behind the mountains too early in the afternoons at lower altitudes. But he planted above the limit set by the DOC and only after demonstrating an ever-improving quality in his wines was he vindicated with changes to the rules.

His other battle was with screwcaps. Franz justified his decision to move all his wines to screwcap, which was met with a backlash in Italy. But by making the move he avoided the loss of control that comes with sealing bottles with cork.

James Thorne has put together a 3-pack of these delicious Cesconi wines at an exclusive 15% discountwith delivery in sustainable recyclable packaging.

Simply book your spaces and we'll send a link for ordering the wines. We will also send instructions for joining Zoom from a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile phone. Zoom is a very sociable medium for wine tasting and we can guarantee you'll have fun! Each session will last just over an hour.
